Today, our lecturer assigned us to choose any location on the IIUM Gombak campus for our on-campus observation. We had to take creative and meaningful photos with visuals related to our observations on campus and how we, as students, are promoting sustainability. After our observation, we wrote three insightful lessons based on our chosen site/location. Focusing on how we can contribute to sustainability on campus and why these lessons are significant.
This simple picture reflects a profound message for our society. The right water usage is essential to avoid wastage and ensure sustainable consumption. Referring to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, raising awareness about the importance of water as a vital resource in our daily lives is crucial.
Imagine living without water; it would significantly impact our quality of life. For example, if your area experiences water shortages due to maintenance work or operational issues, and the water supply is temporarily cut off, it would create numerous challenges. You might have to buy water for drinking, cooking, and washing, among other needs. Given a choice between a blackout or a water shortage, many would likely choose the blackout, as there are alternative solutions to cope without electricity. However, a lack of water severely disrupts essential daily activities and is much harder to manage.
This simple scenario reminds us of the importance of conserving water. Simple actions, such as turning off the tap when not in use (when brushing the teeth), can prevent unnecessary wastage. Not only does overuse of water lead to higher bills, but it is also unsustainable in the long term. Then, when taking ablutions, one must reduce the water going out instead of turning it on excessively.
We can also reflect on the struggles faced by countries like Cambodia and parts of Africa, where access to clean water is limited. Many rely on water wells for their basic needs. This highlights the privilege of having water readily available and the responsibility to use it wisely.
As a reminder from the Quran, Surah Al-Isra (26-27) states:
"And do not spend wastefully. Surely the wasteful are ˹like˺ brothers to the devils. And the Devil is ever ungrateful to his Lord."
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding wastefulness and using resources responsibly. As Muslims and humans, we are entrusted to use resources like water sustainably to ensure long-term benefits and maintain a good quality of life. By taking these small but impactful steps, we can secure a better quality of life for ourselves and others while fulfilling our duty to protect this essential resource.
