Week 6 : Roles of Universities and Sustainable Development

We've reached week 6! Our lecturer assigned us to choose any location in the IIUM Gombak Campus that reflects aspects of sustainable development. We had to take creative and meaningful photos highlighting our group in that location, with visuals that relate to the university's role in promoting sustainability. Then, we wrote three insightful lessons connecting the topic of sustainable development to our chosen site. We focused on how the university setting aligns with sustainable practices and goals.

The University of IIUM has done a lot of awareness of the university's roles in promoting sustainability. One of their effort around the Mahallah is to put a reminder to switch off the lights and plugs before the student leaves their room. Other than that, they placed the same sign around the toilet, so that students will remember to not waste water and electricity. Next, as the rubbish bins are easy to access, students and staff can easily throw their rubbish. Hence, the Kulliyyah will have a clean environment and bearable smell which can avoid any negative health possibilities. Lastly, the sign of the crosswalk is yellow in colour and lots of 'Persons with Disabilities' signs near the crosswalk. This is to remind all vehicle users that our university have disabled people and keep them aware if they're crossing the road. The impact of this effort will keep the safety around the university by avoiding any accident issues.

Apart from the activity assigned by our lecturer, we were given a video of his lecture on this week's topic about the role of universities and sustainable development. So, university can contribute to sustainable development agenda through education. How? By providing students with information, skills and encouragement to understand about the SDGs. Next, enforcement of principles of the SDG within their own governance and promoting the SDG as the topic of research within the university. What about the role of students? Well, the students should be a responsible consumer. For instance, do not waste foods. Other than that, utilize the trash cans and do not throw rubbish everywhere. Finally, organizing and join the awareness campaign as part of the environment education.

Week 3 : Maqasid Shariah

WEEK 3 : MAQASID SHARIAH This week, we were assigned to go to the IIUM Gallery at the Rectory of the MAF building to write three observations about Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development.   Maqasid means heading towards a direction. Shariah refers to water springs that provide clear and straight mazhab viewpoints, beverages, pathways, and what Allah has approved in the area of aqidah as well as rules and the religion. Promoting and defending the welfare of people and the environment is the Shariah's ultimate goal. There are five necessities of human existence in Maqasid Shariah which are faith, life, intellect, lineage and wealth. We need to take care of our faith as it guides our minds to always do good deeds and avoid bad desires. Islam emphasises inter-faith dialogue as a way to build understanding and find commonalities for the benefit of humanity. Besides that, in terms of intellect, it is the most significant blessing which Allah SWT has favoured people with so that they...

Week 10 : Measurement, Indices & Indicators for Sustainable Development & SDG

This week, we had our quiz, which we had to go through the Google Form provided by our lecturer. We were also given a recorded lecture to complete our course outline about measurement, indices, and indicators for sustainable development and SDG. An index is an instrument or technique utilized to measure any success. The Malaysian Shariah Index is a systematic metric for assessing the government's performance in implementing national governance according to the principles of Maqasid Shariah. The Sustainable Development Indicator (SDI) is a quantitative instrument that evaluates changes while measuring and conveying advancements in the sustainable utilization and management of economic, social, institutional, and environmental resources. There are four categories based on their characteristics. The initial category is environmental indicators, which assess the condition of the environment and natural resources. Examples : encompass air quality indexes, greenhouse gas emissions, and w...
