Week 3 : Maqasid Shariah

WEEK 3 : MAQASID SHARIAH

This week, we were assigned to go to the IIUM Gallery at the Rectory of the MAF building to write three observations about Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development.

Maqasid means heading towards a direction. Shariah refers to water springs that provide clear and straight mazhab viewpoints, beverages, pathways, and what Allah has approved in the area of aqidah as well as rules and the religion.

  • Promoting and defending the welfare of people and the environment is the Shariah's ultimate goal.
  • There are five necessities of human existence in Maqasid Shariah which are faith, life, intellect, lineage and wealth. We need to take care of our faith as it guides our minds to always do good deeds and avoid bad desires. Islam emphasises inter-faith dialogue as a way to build understanding and find commonalities for the benefit of humanity.
  • Besides that, in terms of intellect, it is the most significant blessing which Allah SWT has favoured people with so that they acquire knowledge of right and wrong and distinguish virtue from the vice. Therefore, intellect will guide us to sustainable development.
  • Lineage is also significant.
  • Lastly, in terms of wealth, it is regarded as a means of human satisfaction to attain 'Al-Falah' or success in this world and hereafter. Therefore, Muslims are required to accumulate health in their search for their livelihood but in doing so, must not contravene shariah principles.

  4. As a student, I could implement it by focusing on certain areas. To protect religion (din), I can work for peace. Stay healthy for my own well-being, to keep life (nafs) safe, to support quality education as it is important for our intellect (aql), and to use sustainable consumption. To get other people to join, I will set a good example and raise awareness that are in line with these SDG values.

Week 1 : Introduction to Sustainable Development

Salam all, though I joined the Sejahtera class on Week 3, I did watch the video provided by our lecturer, Prof. Dr. Suhaimi through iTa'Leem. Throughout the video of Week 1, our lecturer briefed and provided some explanations about sustainable development and the concept of sustainability. Here's what I reflected by the end of the session:- 1. Our lecturer defined sustainable development and the concept of sustainability. Sustainable means the ability to maintain while sustainable development addresses current demands while preserving future generations' ability to meet their own. It requires balancing economic growth, environmental conservation, and social well-being.  2. There are 3 concepts under sustainable development which are environmental conservation, economic development and social sustainability. Why is it important? - for a viable natural environment - a nurturing community - a sufficient economy 3. Besides that, our lecturer also explained the evolution of sus...

Week 10 : Measurement, Indices & Indicators for Sustainable Development & SDG

This week, we had our quiz, which we had to go through the Google Form provided by our lecturer. We were also given a recorded lecture to complete our course outline about measurement, indices, and indicators for sustainable development and SDG. An index is an instrument or technique utilized to measure any success. The Malaysian Shariah Index is a systematic metric for assessing the government's performance in implementing national governance according to the principles of Maqasid Shariah. The Sustainable Development Indicator (SDI) is a quantitative instrument that evaluates changes while measuring and conveying advancements in the sustainable utilization and management of economic, social, institutional, and environmental resources. There are four categories based on their characteristics. The initial category is environmental indicators, which assess the condition of the environment and natural resources. Examples : encompass air quality indexes, greenhouse gas emissions, and w...
