Week 2 : Islam and Sustainable Development

Salam all, as the same from week 1 I did my studies for week 2 through the video provided by our lecturer, Prof. Dr Suhaimi through iTa'leem. As for week 2, the focus was on Islam and sustainable development which we focused on 3 main things, Islam and social sustainability, Islam and environmental sustainability and Islam and economic sustainability. Here's my reflection for week 2:-

1. First of all, the concept of sustainable development in Islam is defined as the responsible use of resources and the stewardship (Khilafah) of the Earth, which ensures the well-being of present and future generations. This is based on the guidelines and principles of sustainability in the Quran which are justice (Adl),  stressing balance (Mizan) and Amanah in all aspects of life. Islam believes that humanity has been entrusted with the Earth as caretakers, and it must manage its resources wisely and responsibly, maintaining natural habitats, supporting social justice, and creating economic fairness. The objective is to attain wealth while upholding the ideals of respect for creation and the moral commitment to conserve the world for future generations.

2. For Islam and environmental sustainability, each of us has the right to benefit from the essential environmental elements and resources such as water, the land, the air and sunlight. However, we need to be responsible for each resource given by Allah. It is the Amanah, our religious duty demanded by Allah. Hence, we need to be responsible such as using natural resources efficiently, proper use of water without wasting it and preventing pollution. 

3. Islam and social sustainability. There are 3 in Islam as Rahmatan Lil Alamin:-
- Man as Khalifah on Earth
- Amanah as fundamental governance of society
- The concept of Shura

4. Lastly, Islam and economic sustainability. Islam prohibits poverty as it is close to disbelief (Kufr). Hence we provide effective means via Waqaf (endowment) and Zakat (alms) for people who are in need. As Prophet Muhammad SAW said, "When a man dies, no further reward is recorded for his actions with three exceptions which are Sadaqah Jariah, knowledge from which benefit continues and a prayer of a good son to his dead father."

Week 3 : Maqasid Shariah

WEEK 3 : MAQASID SHARIAH This week, we were assigned to go to the IIUM Gallery at the Rectory of the MAF building to write three observations about Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development.   Maqasid means heading towards a direction. Shariah refers to water springs that provide clear and straight mazhab viewpoints, beverages, pathways, and what Allah has approved in the area of aqidah as well as rules and the religion. Promoting and defending the welfare of people and the environment is the Shariah's ultimate goal. There are five necessities of human existence in Maqasid Shariah which are faith, life, intellect, lineage and wealth. We need to take care of our faith as it guides our minds to always do good deeds and avoid bad desires. Week 10 : Measurement, Indices & Indicators for Sustainable Development & SDG

This week, we had our quiz, which we had to go through the Google Form provided by our lecturer. We were also given a recorded lecture to complete our course outline about measurement, indices, and indicators for sustainable development and SDG. An index is an instrument or technique utilized to measure any success. The Malaysian Shariah Index is a systematic metric for assessing the government's performance in implementing national governance according to the principles of Maqasid Shariah. The Sustainable Development Indicator (SDI) is a quantitative instrument that evaluates changes while measuring and conveying advancements in the sustainable utilization and management of economic, social, institutional, and environmental resources.
